A team of students from Cowbridge Comprehensive School in the Vale of Glamorgan were named Media Masterclass Business Challenge Champions 2012 after winning a competition open to secondary schools. In conjunction with Careers Wales, Colorfoto invited students from across South Wales to come up with a product or service that was innovative, competitive, environmentally friendly and could benefit the local community.
Following submission of their concepts to Colorfoto, six finalist teams were selected to visit our laboratory in Cardiff to produce promotional materials to help sell their ideas to a judging panel of business leaders. The competition final was hosted by the Cardiff School of Creative and Cultural Industries, University of Glamorgan at the Atrium, Cardiff and judged by Professor Peter Robertson, Dean of the School, Debbie Lewis, Customer Service and HR manager of eLINIA WebServices and Richard Tinkler, Director of Colorfoto Ltd. Congratulations to the Cowbridge students whose creativity and in-depth research into their youth magazine idea, greatly impressed the judges.

A children’s choir, winners of Save the Children’s ‘Born To Sing’ competition, recently gave shoppers at the John Lewis Store in Cardiff a musical, festive treat. Pupils from Cwmbwrla Primary School in Swansea won the competition sponsored by Colorfoto and part of their prize was a Christmas guest appearance at the store. The event was organised by the Cardiff Branch of Save the Children and held at Howell’s School, Llandaff.

After the huge success of the 2010 competition when over £3000 was raised for Save The Children, 9 schools were selected to compete in the 2011 event which exceeded all expectations in terms of the quality of the singing and support from parents.

Cwmbwrla pupils out-sang tough competition from schools across South Wales and impressed the judges’ panel chaired by Angela Livingstone, Head of Voice at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama with their moving performance of Light a Candle and Hallelujah.

Congratulations to pupils and staff from all of the schools for your dedication and hard work which made for another success story for Save The Children. We aim to make this an annual November event so watch this space for 2012 competition details on how to enter.

A whole year in the planning by 9 primary schools, Save The Children, Colorfoto and Howell’s School, Cardiff; this was the huge undertaking by dedicated teams to achieve a Christmas extravaganza success. Colorfoto’s sponsorship of the Christmas Past Fair at Howell’s School on 28th November was a most memorable event, particularly for the pupils and staff of the schools that took part in the main feature of the fair, the ‘Primary Schools’ Choir Competition’, which was won by Ysgol Y Wern, Cardiff. 800 visitors came along to support the event, held in aid of Save The Children. It was the first one of its kind and the school’s Victorian building proved an ideal setting. A huge thank you goes to Sally Davis, Principal of Howell’s School and her wonderful staff for hosting the fair, which we are certain will become an annual event. Our thanks also go to The High Sheriff of South Glamorgan, Mrs Anne Campbell for presenting the prizes and Mr Richard Powell, Director of Global Child Safeguarding in his role as MC. We will keep you posted on how much money was raised for Save The Children.

These things only come about in a happy and caring environment, the product of the excellent rapport between the staff and the pupils, solid parental backing and the support of the wider community.
Colorfoto’s support for Save The Children continued in 2010. Our school customers came up trumps again when they helped us raise £1363.62 at our 6 Nations Rugby events. Save The Children’s Fund Raising Executive, Jess Evans said, “Colorfoto’s support has been wonderful over the past few years and this payment will make a huge difference to the lives of many children. The current situation in Niger requires urgent action, and we are providing monthly cash transfers to help tide families over until the next harvest, as well as treating severely malnourished children. We need to take immediate action and Colorfoto’s kind donation will help tremendously.”

Children and Staff are celebrating success following a recent Estyn inspection. Upon arrival the registered inspector, Dr. David Ellis informed staff that this was his 99th inspection – that’s a lot of inspections.
The report stated that Beaufort Hill Primary School in Ebbw Vale is an exceptionally good school, where standards, teaching, provision and management have many outstanding features. Dr. Ellis went on to say that out of the 99 schools he has inspected it was the first time that he had awarded seven grade ones and how impressed the team had been not only with the school’s achievements but also with the exemplary behaviour of the children.
Head Teacher, Phill Brookman, along with his staff and pupils are over the moon with the report, and he is so pleased that the hard work of his staff and pupils has been recognised. Many congratulations from all at Colorfoto!

The Engineering Education Scheme – Wales operates in partnership with the Royal Academy of Engineering. The aim of the scheme is to encourage the best talent in our schools to take up engineering as a career, following a university degree in an engineering discipline. The mechanism for this is to organise industrial-based engineering projects for teams of talented sixth form students, which they will find both challenging and stimulating. The culmination of the project was the Awards & Presentation Day at The Celtic Manor Resort on Monday 22nd March where the schools displayed their projects. Each school was assessed and the ten category winners presented with their prizes.
The highlight of the event was the spectacle of the full size replica of the Bloodhound SSC. Wing Commander Andy Green, who will be piloting this supersonic car, was one of the guest speakers. He gave an exciting account of the Bloodhound project, and of how he hopes to break the previous land speed record by achieving 1000 miles an hour, when he gets behind the wheel in 2012!
